Meaningful PE: a practical guide
Meaningful PE brings the learner’s experience into focus. These five features help guide planning; student voice and reflection help us understand what actually matters to each learner.
Five features to notice
- Positive social interaction: relationships, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. Ask: Who or what helped you learn?
- Fun & delight: enjoyment, play, and moments students want to return to. Ask: What would you enjoy trying again?
- Just-right challenge: an achievable next step that stretches the learner. Ask: What was tricky in a good way?
- Motor competence: developing movement skills and noticing progress. Ask: What changed when you used feedback?
- Personal relevance: connections with interests, goals, and life beyond class. Ask: Where could this fit in your life?
Try one purposeful adjustment
- Name the learning target in student-friendly language.
- Offer a meaningful choice connected to that learning.
- Provide an accessible route and an appropriate next challenge.
- Listen to a short student reflection and use it to plan the next step.
Students can share thinking through movement, conversation, pointing, drawing, or another accessible response. A teacher’s intended experience and a student’s actual experience may differ.
A question to carry
Will they VALUE it, REMEMBER it, and USE it?
